Frequently asked questions about OSKAR
Connection options
It can also be connected to any other device that has one of these connections (e.g. PC, tablet, CD player) and voice-optimised playback is also possible.
To enjoy better sound quality, we recommend connecting via an optical audio cable. If your TV does not have a digital optical audio output or if it is already occupied by another device, connect the 3.5 mm audio cable via the headphone jack of your TV.
Tone and sound reproduction
A1: When connected via the headphone jack (3.5mm):
Some TVs require you to activate audio playback via your headphone jack. Use your TV remote control to access your TV's settings menu, select Audio and follow the instructions in your TV's operating manual.
A2: When connected via TV audio outputs:
Some TVs require you to activate the audio output connections for sound playback. Use your TV remote control to access the TV settings menu, select Audio and follow the instructions in your TV's operating manual.
A3: When connected via the optical digital audio connection:
With some TV sets you must activate "PCM" for sound reproduction. Without setting the digital audio connection to PCM output, sound may not be output. Use your TV remote control to access your TV's settings menu, select Audio and follow the instructions in your TV's operating manual to activate PCM.
If you hear a hissing sound from the TV speech amplifier, the problem may be caused by the following influences:
- The 3.5mm audio cable is not connected properly or is dusty. Make sure the audio cable is firmly connected to the headphone jack of your TV and the TV voice amplifier. If the headphone output is dirty, this may result in a poor connection. Disconnect and reconnect the audio cable several times or clean it with a cotton swab or similar. This may improve the connection.
- Mobile phones, Wi-Fi access points, microwave ovens or other devices that transmit radio waves cause interference. Noise can sometimes be generated by radio waves and cause radio interference. E.g. immediately before and/or after using a mobile phone, and when making and receiving calls. Place OSKAR and the base station (transmitting part) at a sufficient distance from such devices or do not use these devices near the TV speech amplifier.
- Silence effect: When OSKAR is switched on and does not receive sound through the TV, a hissing sound may be heard. The sound is related to the volume. If it bothers you, lower the volume.
- Ground problem with the TV: Poorly shielded cables from other devices connected to the TV, such as scart cables from satellite systems, receivers, set-top boxes, etc., can cause interference. The only remedy is to use well-shielded cables.
A1: If the base station and/or OSKAR are too close to wireless devices with a frequency band of 2.4 GHz (e.g.: wireless keyboards, microwave ovens, WLAN devices, radios and others), the sound may be interrupted. If the sound is frequently interrupted, switch off the wireless devices beforehand or use OSKAR as far away from these devices as possible.
A2: The sound may also be interrupted if the base station (transmitting part) and the TV are connected via an optical audio cable and the cable is not properly connected. Plug the cable firmly into the TV and the base station (transmitting part) until you hear a click.
