The actual benchmark is therefore the neighbor. What they hear depends on many aspects, such as the building’s construction, the time of day, and what noises are currently occurring.

There is no fixed number or unit for TV room volume. Decibel readings provide a rough orientation but do not apply equally to every living situation. The display on the remote control is also only of limited help, as the values of two devices cannot be compared.

Highlight Box

Room volume is measured by what reaches the neighbor, not by how loud it is in one’s own room.

There is no officially defined decibel value, which is why reference values circulate everywhere.

The number on the remote control cannot be converted to decibels and cannot be compared between devices.

From TV sound, mostly lower frequencies penetrate walls, while voices are less audible.

TV sound is particularly disturbing when it is heard repeatedly for hours.

The Meaning of Room Volume

The term room volume is a word from shared living, not from technology. It describes not a setting, but what can still be heard beyond one’s own four walls. A number on the remote control therefore does not represent it.

A Result in the Neighboring Room

The decisive factor is the room where the sound arrives, while it may be correspondingly louder in one’s own living room, as long as the walls, ceiling, and doors absorb enough of it. This precisely explains why the same TV, with the same settings, runs unnoticed in one house and is a constant issue in another. And it explains why it’s difficult to judge your own volume from the sofa.

However, complete silence is not implied. Some residual noise from a neighboring apartment is simply part of living, especially in poorly soundproofed buildings. The line is drawn where a background noise becomes something clearly noticeable.

The Missing Fixed Decibel Number

There is no officially defined value for room volume. Nevertheless, common figures are around 40 decibels during the day and around 30 decibels at night, each measured at the neighbor’s location. These come from individual court decisions and guidelines originally intended for other purposes, which is why they serve as a reference point but not as a universally valid upper limit. Building construction and distance significantly alter the result anyway.

The period from 10 PM is generally considered typical night rest. However, this is not uniformly regulated nationwide, as regulations come from states and municipalities and are often supplemented by house rules in many buildings, meaning times can differ from place to place.

Room Volume in Decibels

Decibel is primarily the unit for sound pressure level. The scale condenses a very large pressure range into manageable numbers, which is why there are only about 40 points between a quiet room and a busy street. Measuring devices weight frequencies similarly to the ear, which is why readings often appear as dB(A).

Decibels in Everyday Life

The numbers only become tangible when compared. The following values apply to typical distances from the sound source. Surprisingly, the TV does not appear here. There is simply no fixed level for it.

Noise

Approximate Level

Very Quiet Room

20 to 30 dB

Close Whisper, Quiet Residential Street

approx. 40 dB

Speaking Person, Normal Conversation

40 to 60 dB

Car at a Few Meters Distance

60 to 80 dB

As a rule of thumb, an increase of about 10 decibels sounds roughly twice as loud. Small adjustments to the control therefore make more of a difference than the pure number suggests.

Two Numbers, Both Correct

This is where many stumble. A TV in the living room often operates in the range of a normal conversation or slightly above. At the same time, only 30 to 40 decibels should reach the neighbor. But what does that mean specifically?

The higher value describes the level in the living room itself, where the device is located. The lower value describes what remains behind the house wall. The insulation of the house lies between these two, and it often varies greatly from building to building.

The Number on the Remote Control

TVs display volume as a value between 0 and 100. This value has no fixed relationship to decibels and only describes the position of the control in the device. The same value means different levels on two different TVs.

The scale is also shifted by the audio source, the sound mode, and especially by a connected soundbar. Therefore, two devices are not comparable anyway. An agreement like “never above 20” is thus of little use. A cross-check in the neighboring room or outside the apartment door is more reliable.

How TV Sound Travels Next Door

Not all TV sound travels equally well through rooms and walls. To understand this, one must know which sounds actually manage to pass loudly through walls. Only then can one assess where turning down the volume will actually make a difference.

Low Tones Pass Through First

Low tones are often more difficult to shield than higher frequencies. Therefore, in the neighboring apartment, one often hears bass, film music, or muffled effects more readily, while individual words are barely intelligible. How noticeable this is, however, strongly depends on the building’s construction and the walls between the rooms.

Some of it doesn’t travel through the air, but as structure-borne sound through the floor. If a speaker or subwoofer is placed firmly on furniture or directly on the floor, it transmits vibrations into the building structure. Reducing the bass level slightly in such cases is more effective than any other measure.

Construction and Placement

How much TV sound actually reaches the neighbor largely depends on the building. Solid walls and well-insulated ceilings usually block more sound than light partition walls or leaky doors. In poorly soundproofed houses, the volume often needs to be reduced more significantly to ensure as little as possible is heard outside one’s own apartment.

Even if many things cannot be influenced, the positioning of the TV or external devices is within one’s control. If the sound is directed straight at the neighbor’s wall, it travels further than if it’s directed into the room, so simply repositioning the device can be helpful. A soft pad under the device and a few inches of distance from the wall reduce transmission without having to listen more quietly. Carpets, curtains, and filled shelves also absorb reflections in one’s own room.

Assessing Your Own Volume

How loud the TV has actually become over time often goes unnoticed by oneself. Especially small adjustments to the control are easily overlooked in everyday life, while others in the household or neighbors are more likely to notice them.

For a quick assessment, a simple cross-check helps. Let the TV play and briefly go into the adjacent room or outside the apartment door. If the sound is still clearly audible there, it’s worth turning the volume down a bit more.

Consideration in Shared Living

A common observation is that noises from a neighboring apartment are particularly disturbing when they are repeatedly perceptible over a longer period. With the TV, this can be especially noticeable in the evening, when music, effects, or individual sound peaks regularly penetrate walls and ceilings. It’s not just about the volume.

Poor Comprehension as a Cause

One reason for a consistently loud TV can be that dialogues are difficult to understand. Anyone who turns up the volume in this situation makes the whole apartment louder without gaining much for themselves. For the neighbors, something noticeably changes, but for one’s own comprehension, little does.

Another approach involves devices that output sound directly at the seating position, such as a TV speech amplifier like OSKAR. The room then remains at a volume that everyone else can live with. What penetrates next door is no longer determined by the person with the poorest hearing.

Before using additional technology, it’s also worth checking the sound menu. Depending on the TV, mid-range frequencies can be boosted, a speech mode activated, or speech-focused audio tracks selected. A shorter distance to the speaker can also help keep the overall room volume lower.

Different Needs in the Household

When it comes to volume, needs often diverge within the same household. One person wants to turn the TV up a bit louder, while for another, it quickly becomes too much. Then, during TV watching, adjustments are constantly made without finding a truly good setting for both.

Further Everyday Options

Additionally, there are some simple measures that can often reduce the room volume a bit further.

Sit closer to the TV so that speech remains easily understandable even at lower volumes.

Turn on night mode or dynamic range compression so that particularly loud passages don’t stand out as much.

Reduce the bass slightly if low tones are particularly noticeable in adjacent rooms.

Use subtitles if needed, especially when watching TV quietly in the evening.

Talk to neighbors early if volume repeatedly becomes an issue.

Whether a noise is perceived as disturbing depends not only on its volume. Duration, time of day, and the type of sound also play a role. Often, a combination of appropriate settings, slightly lower room volume, and simple communication helps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many decibels is room volume?

Common reference values are around 40 decibels during the day and around 30 at night. These values refer to the neighboring room, which is easily overlooked when reading such information. In one’s own living room, the sound level is many times higher without becoming a nuisance. Anyone looking for a single number will inevitably be disappointed, as distance and construction also play a role.

What TV volume is considered room volume?

There is no universally valid number on the remote control, as this scale differs between devices, sound sources, and sound modes. Instead of focusing on the setting, it’s better to look at the result. If the sound is still clearly audible in the adjacent room or outside the apartment door, it’s too high for room volume. With muffled, indistinct residual noise, it usually fits. This test takes one minute and replaces any guesswork with numbers.

When should you pay attention to room volume?

In everyday life, the time from 10 PM is considered a guideline, and in many places, also early afternoon, as well as Sundays and public holidays. This is not uniformly binding everywhere, as house rules and local regulations differ. During the day, mutual consideration is always important, especially if shift work or small children are a factor in the building. A look at your own house rules provides clarity.

Can room volume be measured with a smartphone?

It’s sufficient for a rough classification, but not for reliable values. Built-in microphones are not calibrated, so values can vary significantly depending on the device, app, and holding position. Between two apps on the same phone, there are often several decibels difference. Such apps are useful for comparing two situations in the same room, for example, before and after turning down the volume. However, the values are not suitable as evidence in a dispute.

Why does the neighbor hear the TV but not understand a word?

Many building components insulate high frequencies better than low ones. Therefore, from a film scene, often only the low-frequency components remain, while little of the voices comes through. What is perceived then is a dull thumping without recognizable content, which many find particularly disturbing. How pronounced this is, however, depends on the construction. Reducing the bass level or decoupling the device from the floor often achieves more than simply listening more quietly overall.

    Sources & References

German Environment Agency.
