It complements other speakers where their bass reproduction reaches its limits. In a home theater, it provides the typical deep impact for explosions, footsteps, film scores, and more.

Anyone looking to improve the entire TV sound, not just the TV audio, will eventually consider a subwoofer. For impact and richness, it indeed offers significant added value. However, for improving dialogue, it offers little to nothing. Speech lies in entirely different frequency bands, and a powerful bass can even make listening more strenuous in unfavorable cases.

Highlight Box

A subwoofer is designed for very low frequencies and complements other speakers in that range.

For the effects channel of a multi-channel system, the standard specifies a range of 20 to 120 Hertz.

Active versions include the amplifier, while passive ones require a separate power amplifier.

Low tones distribute unevenly in a room, which is why placement is crucial for optimized sound.

A subwoofer contributes little to nothing for speech intelligibility.

Function and Frequency Range

Every loudspeaker has a frequency range it reproduces well. Above and below this range, the speaker fails to produce sound. For small enclosures, low tones are practically in the less important category. This is precisely where a subwoofer complements. It then leaves everything above its range to the other speakers. In audio systems for the living room, a subwoofer is often a sensible addition.

The Lowest Part of the Frequency Range

A subwoofer operates where tones are perceived more as rumbling than as sound. Its enclosure is significantly larger than that of a conventional speaker, and the diaphragm also has a larger diameter. The reason for this is quite trivial, as low frequencies have long wavelengths and require a lot of air movement to produce an audible level.

How far this range extends upwards depends on the device and its settings. The effects channel in multi-channel systems serves as a guide. It is roughly designed for 20 to 120 Hertz. Above that, the other speakers take over.

However, the Hertz specifications only indicate the range in which the device operates, not how uniformly it does so. A model that theoretically reaches very low frequencies can still boom in a small room. Conversely, a compact enclosure is often sufficient because the room itself amplifies the low-frequency components.

The Level Requirement for Low Tones

The ear is not equally sensitive across the frequency range. Equal loudness contours (according to ISO 226) show that a low tone requires significantly higher sound pressure than a mid-range tone for both to appear equally loud. This requirement increases steeply towards very low frequencies.

This leads to a practical consequence. A speaker intended to reproduce low-frequency components must provide a lot of power in that range. However, it is only relieved if a crossover actually removes these components from it. Smaller speakers can thus concentrate on the range they handle better.

The Effects Channel in Multi-Channel Systems

In multi-channel formats like 5.1, the designation after the dot refers to the additional effects channel, known in English as the Low Frequency Effects Channel. It is transmitted separately from the main audio and is intentionally narrow-band. For film and broadcasting, a level boost of 10 decibels compared to the main channels is provided for playback. Good to know: This is handled differently for individual music formats.

Distinguishable from this are designations like 2.1 in speaker systems. There, the designation usually only indicates that a subwoofer is included with two main speakers. It does not imply a separate effects channel in the source material. The effects channel is a signal path in the sound mix, while the subwoofer is a speaker in the room. Through bass management, it also handles low-frequency components from the normal audio channels.

Construction and Designs

From the outside, a subwoofer usually looks unspectacular, often like a simple cube. Inside, however, there is a whole series of mechanisms that shape its sound character. These include the driver, the amplifier, the radiation pattern, and the design of the enclosure.

From Voice Coil to Moving Air

Inside is the woofer, which is the actual chassis with a voice coil in a magnetic field. When current flows through the coil, a force is generated, and the coil moves back and forth. The diaphragm is attached to it, displacing air and thus generating sound waves. Two components keep the diaphragm on track: the spider inside and the surround at the edge.

Because low frequencies demand large excursions, these parts in a subwoofer are more robust than in a tweeter. In the device’s datasheets, you will find specifications such as impedance, power handling, and frequency range. These values describe the device’s “limits.”

Active and Passive Versions

An active subwoofer has the amplifier built-in and therefore requires its own power outlet. It is connected via a signal cable, usually to a dedicated output on the amplifier or soundbar. This design is the norm and can be used without additional accessories.

A passive subwoofer, on the other hand, contains only the chassis and the enclosure. It requires an external power amplifier that provides enough power in the low-frequency range. Such solutions are more common in professional systems. They play hardly any role for connection to a television.

Many active devices now operate without signal cables. The transmission then occurs via its own wireless connection between the soundbar and subwoofer, less commonly via Bluetooth. The device still needs power, so it is never completely wireless. With fixed-coupled sets, the subwoofer usually cannot be swapped for another model.

Radiation Pattern and Placement Options

Another difference concerns the direction in which the chassis operates. In a front-firing model, the diaphragm faces forward into the room, while in a down-firing model, it faces downwards towards the floor. However, for optimal output, the positioning, distance to walls, and interaction with the room are primarily decisive.

The surface beneath is therefore also practically important. A down-firing enclosure needs sufficient air between the diaphragm and the floor, which is why a high-pile carpet can be unfavorable here. The same applies to the reflex port of a bass-reflex enclosure, which should also not be obstructed.

Sealed, Bass Reflex, and Bandpass

A sealed enclosure is airtight. The enclosed air acts as an additional spring for the diaphragm. This design requires more power for the same level but rolls off more gently below its operating range.

A bass-reflex enclosure has a tuned opening, known as a port or vent. The air inside resonates and boosts a specific frequency range, providing more output at the same power. However, below the tuning frequency, the level drops off more quickly. The designs thus differ primarily in efficiency, lower cutoff frequency, and behavior below that.

Placement and Setup in the Living Room

With a subwoofer, its position in the room plays a more important role than with any other speaker. The same device can boom in one spot and be barely audible two meters away. The reason lies in the physics of long waves that encounter walls and ceilings in the listening room.

Room Modes and Uneven Bass Distribution

Low tones have wavelengths in the range of several meters, thus on the order of a living room. This creates standing waves, called room modes, between opposing walls. In some places, the waves add up, and the bass becomes loud; in others, they partially cancel each other out.

Low frequencies provide significantly less distinct directional information than higher ones. A subwoofer with a low crossover frequency is therefore usually harder to pinpoint as a single sound source. This offers freedom in placement that should be utilized. What matters less is where the subwoofer points, and more where it is located.

Finding the Location in Steps

The best way to find the right location is by experimenting. Even small changes in position can audibly affect how evenly the bass sounds in the room.

Temporarily place the subwoofer at your listening position.

Play a movie scene or a piece of music with consistent bass on a loop.

Listen to the possible placement spots in the room one by one, listening close to the floor, approximately at the height of the eventual location.

Choose the spot where the bass sounds even, and individual tones neither stand out nor disappear.

Place the subwoofer there and re-check the result from your normal listening position.

Corners can significantly increase bass levels, but they also strongly excite room modes. It is therefore worthwhile to try several locations instead of immediately placing the device in the nearest corner. Small shifts of a few centimeters, however, make little difference with wavelengths of several meters.

Crossover Frequency, Phase, and Level

Active devices usually have three controls on the back. Together, they determine how well the subwoofer integrates into the overall sound.

The crossover frequency, also called the cutoff frequency, determines the upper limit of the subwoofer’s operating range. It should be set where the main speakers begin to roll off at the low end. How steep the transition is depends on the crossover in the device.

The phase control shifts the signal in time. If set incorrectly, the subwoofer and main speakers can cancel each other out in the crossover region.

The level control determines the volume relative to the rest. Too much of it is the most common setup mistake.

A good guideline is bass that is noticeable when absent, but not perceived as a separate sound source. If the subwoofer is clearly localizable, one should consider the crossover frequency in addition to the level. Many amplifiers also come with automatic calibration, which provides a sometimes very useful starting point.

Subwoofers and Speech Intelligibility

Many people buy a subwoofer because their TV sound is unsatisfactory. For impact and richness, it does work. However, if you primarily want to optimize dialogue and voices, you will be disappointed. A subwoofer is no help here.

Speech Intelligibility and Frequencies

For intelligible speech, mid and higher frequencies are particularly important. Many of the sounds that distinguish words lie in this range. A subwoofer, however, operates in the low-frequency range and therefore contributes little to making dialogue clearer.

Too Much Bass in the Soundstage

If the subwoofer is set too loud, the bass can overpower other parts of the sound mix. This is particularly noticeable in films with a lot of music, effects, and deep sounds. Simply turning up the volume usually doesn’t help, because speech and bass both get louder together.

Placement also plays a role. If the room amplifies certain low frequencies, the bass can quickly boom and linger. In such cases, it is worthwhile to adjust the subwoofer’s location and, especially, its level again.

Suitable Settings for Clearer Dialogue

If you primarily want to understand speech better, you should first check the TV’s sound settings. Depending on the device, you might be able to boost the mid-range or activate a speech mode. Speech-optimized audio tracks can also help, as music and background noises are already more separated from dialogue in these.

If speech remains unclear, the distance to the TV can also play a role. The further the sound travels through the room, the more reflections mix in. A hearing solution closer to the seating position therefore addresses the issue at a completely different point than an additional subwoofer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a subwoofer do for TV viewing?

It complements the range where flat-screen TVs and slim soundbars reach their limits. This becomes audible with film scores, effects, and deep sounds that would otherwise sound thin. In contrast, for news or talk shows, the difference is minimal because there are hardly any low-frequency components. The benefit therefore strongly depends on what you primarily watch.

Does a subwoofer improve speech intelligibility?

Generally, it does nothing for this. The device operates below the bands crucial for understanding. A high bass level can also mask them. Anyone buying a subwoofer due to unclear dialogue is therefore investing in the wrong place. It’s more sensible to first check the sound menu and then consider how far the sound has to travel through the room.

What is the difference between a subwoofer and an LFE channel?

In an amplifier’s menu, you encounter both terms separately. Under LFE, it specifies how the additional channel of the source material is handled. Under Subwoofer or Bass Management, on the other hand, you define which low-frequency components from the other speakers go to the device. If you only set one point and forget the other, you’ll later wonder about too little or too much bass.

      Does a subwoofer disturb neighbors?

Low frequencies are attenuated less by walls and ceilings than higher ones, which is why bass, in particular, reaches neighboring apartments. Some of it also travels as structure-borne sound through the floor. An isolation pad can reduce this mechanical path, but it does not stop airborne sound through masonry. In houses with thin walls, a conservatively set level is primarily helpful.

Can you connect a subwoofer directly to the TV?

Usually not, as most TVs lack a suitable output. The common way is via an amplifier or soundbar that provides a corresponding connection or wireless capability. Some sets are factory-paired and cannot be combined with third-party devices.
